We all dream of flawless, glowing skin, but with new products constantly hitting the shelves and the seemingly endless skincare tips advice out there on the Internet, it’s not always easy to figure out the skincare routine that’s going to work best for you.
You know the basics – drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, and wash your face, but what about everything in between? Luckily, there’s no need to shell out tons of cash on any magical procedures or expensive creams to achieve flawless skin.
We spoke with dermatologists and top beauty experts to put together a list of some of the best skincare tips.
Mist moisturizing water
If you’re going to mist don’t just mist water since water evaporates on the skin, creating dryness.
Use moisturizing and soothing essences as mist water to avoid this situation.
Wet your face for better absorption
Dermatologists and beauty gurus alike have agreed that skin is more absorbent when damp.
Does this mean leaving your face soaking wet after that morning wash? Um, no.
But, a little bit of moisture can act as a magnet for nutrients and is an essential first step to healthy skin.
Don’t apply too much product
When it comes to skincare, more is not a good rule. So if you apply too much moisturizer, the product will likely pill or could potentially block your pores.
Plus, it’s a total waste of product and your money considering your skin won’t be able to absorb it all anyway.
Use the correct cleanser for your skin type.
“For oily or acne-prone skin, a salicylic gel or benzoyl peroxide wash works great,” says Dr. Ava Shamban, a dermatologist in Santa Monica.
“For dry mature skin, use either a moisturizing glycolic or milky cleanser. For skin with brown spots or melasma, use a brightening wash, such as an alpha hydroxy acid cleanser.”
Never forget to do a patch test
Before you start using a new product, you should always do a patch test to avoid the risk of irritation or an allergic reaction.
Just apply a small amount of product to your inner arm and neck to see how your skin reacts to the formula.
Ditch your astringent for a toner
Most astringents just dry out your face and take away valuable natural nutrients your skin produces on its own.
For most astringents, one of the main ingredients includes alcohol, which is never ideal for the skin.
Toner offers a gentle solution to replace with the same ability to replenish moisture, tightening pores, and balancing the pH of the skin
Never squeeze a pimple if you don’t know how to
That’s because there’s a correct way of popping pimples and if not done properly, you will obviously scar your skin and cause huge dents. Which are almost very difficult to cure. So better avoid this at first.
Never wear makeup to bed
Even if you’re exhausted from a long day of work, make sure to set aside time to take off your makeup.
When you fall asleep in your makeup, it can lead to clogged pores and potential breakouts.
Don’t smoke – skincare tips
Smoking makes your skin look older and contributes to wrinkles.
Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow and makes skin paler.
This also depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to skin health.
